Two new Irish games sites seek volunteers

Two new Irish computer games website, ‘Irish Gamers Ressurected!’ (sic), and ‘Next Gen Ireland’ are looking for volunteers to write. The new sites launch at a time when updates on IrishGamer.ie have come to a standstill.

Both sites are in the early stages, Next Gen Ireland has recently launched and is publishing content (including press releases).

Meanwhile, the blogspot-based Irish Gamers Ressurected!, which we previous reported grew out IrishGamers.ie’s forums, is now looking for staff, but so-far the site only contains internal announcements.

In other Irish games website news (or at least news to us), gamingireland.net have started staff blogs – unfortunately login is needed to view, and registration was not working when we tried.

Irish Gamers Ressurected is located at http://igressurected.blogspot.com/, while Next Gen Ireland is at http://www.nextgenireland.citymax.com/. There are more links to Irish computer games websites here.

While it is encouraging to see new Irish game-related sites, content as ever is king. The unfortunate demise of IG, while not a perfect site, had some original content which appealed to the Irish Gamer :)

The upsurge of sites such as nextgenireland.com which contains a large amount of Press Release information (certainly the Ubisoft and Nintendo content are almost pasted verbatim) is a worrying trend, and serves little more than encouraging the PR train direct from publishers.

It's pleasing to see that sites such as this site, and forums like boards/wiffy carry real news (both good and bad) and contain user content as well.

Keep up the good work :)

I’ve no real problem or dislike of new Irish games sites, in fact, I’d love if there was another multi-format Irish site covering (the little bit of) news from Ireland. (It’s worth noting the site Gaming Ireland - http://www.gamingireland.net/ - is doing a bit of local stuff too)

But I have to agree with you on the type of content, publishing word-for-word press releases (or even fluff rewrites) isn’t news. An overly strong focus on give-aways isn’t inspiring either.

A site closing down after just a year, or turning into it’s forums as has happened with IrighGamer.ie, isn’t going to helpfully to other sites starting off (in saying that we’re all only human, and I may need to stop updating this site some day). Publishers both local and international will be even more careful when dealing with sites. This isn’t the first Irish games site to fold and others have folded in more, let’s say, ‘darker’ scenarios (copying and pasting review, for example).

I had high hopes for IrishGamer.ie, I was even fine with them using a name very similar to my old site (‘the Irish Game’ / theirishgamer.com). But when you claim you’re “glad to be filling a niche as the only Irish games website which is updated regularly", you’re going to be re-quoted when you give in and realise it’s not that easy to keep a site updated. The only thing I really disliked about IG/.ie was their news, or their lack of local news.
