Ironman

Reviewer: Craig Jay Gallagher There exists a rather unfortunate trend where games based upon films are generally poor. Oft times they are cheap cash in rushed out to coincide with the films release. In recent years this rule has been broke a number of times, most significantly by Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay which remains to this day the finest FPS on any platform as well as being based upon a film. Iron Man which is currently doing extremely well in cinemas is also out across all gaming platforms. While a long way from the quality of Riddick it's still a step above many tie in games.

Nncuvbsgur

Reviewer: Craig Jay Gallagher The ability in games to save at will, gain extra lives, pass by regular check points and generally depend on the ability to begin close to where you are should you die has long been a traditional feature of all games. Not so in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer where dieing during the game really does result in the end of the game. Death is greeted with a  return to square one, there is no second chance. You have to begin anew with no coin, skills reset and all your gear lost. Accepting this simple fact will either allow for a uniquely enjoyable gaming experience or have gamers shrugging their shoulders and looking for the latest brain game in it's place.

Reviewer: Craig Jay Gallagher While grammatically incorrect and a bit bland the title Brain Assist informers gamers of what type game they're getting. While the translated text may at times be side splitting hilarious the game never promises to help with grammar, what it does hope to help improve is your usage of your “right brain”. What your right brain controls is a number of functions including your artistic abilities and your imagination.

REVIEW: Scarface: The World if Yours

Scarface_2
Upon its initial release Scarface: The World is Yours was written off as just another GTA imitator. It’s success had more to do with the popularity of the film than the game its self, which was a pity as the gameplay was actually quiet fun. Like the character, the game has been given a new leash of life on the Wii, and thanks to the unique interactivity offered by the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, this version of Tony Montana’s odysseys is even better.

Channel 6 & Game On now on Sky

Channel6logoSky satellite subscribers will now have access to Ireland’s only TV computer games program ‘Game On’ as the channel it broadcasts on, Channel 6, was made available on Sky channel 223 this week.

Game On is a half-hour long program with reviews and news. Previously, Channel 6 was viewable on
NTL and Chorus cable networks in urban areas.

The channel was first set to launch on both Sky and the cable networks. But it is understood that the company pulled out of the original talks with Sky because the satellite broadcaster would not offer Channel 6 a prominent position on the program guide close to RTE and TV3. The new deal does not offer such.

Hundreds line outside Dublin stores for Wii

Wii_s

One retailer’s pricing sets Ireland out to be one of the dearest places in the world to buy Nintendo's new Wii games console.

Hundreds of gamers lined up outside GameStop on Henry Street and 'Game' on Dawson Street last night to be among the first to buy a Wii at midnight store openings.

Speaking on Today FM’ s Ray Foley Show this afternoon, Michael Finucane, GameStop’s commercial director, said that while the first release of Wiis were mostly reserved for people who pre-ordered their consoles, GamesStop should have a shipment which will include non-booked consoles sometime next week.

He said this will be followed by another shipment before Christmas.

The recommended euro price is €249, and £179 in the Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. However, besides the general euro price there is no set price for the Republic and retailers vary.

Smyth's Toys are selling the Wii for €269.99, putting the console at €20 over the set ‘euro’ price. We have contacted Nintendo’s press office for confirmation on the RRP for the Republic.

Unlike its competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Wii has a smaller advancement gap from its predecessor. The main selling point of the console is its remote control shaped controller with motion sensors that allowed players to control games with movement, such as swings, swipes, and punches.

Late Late Toy Show: Wii’s wee appearance

Wii_boxedWiffy.ie, an independent Irish Nintendo website, isn’t too impressed with the Nintendo Wii’s showing on the Late Late Toy Show…

66We waited, we sat through the cringingly poor intro about aliens, we even watched the Billy Barry Oompa Loompa’s without flicking over, Even when the annoying kid from Kerry was falsetto’ing his way through a book about pirates, we still stayed loyal to the Toy Show. Game On responds to "30 minute ad” claims

Ciaragary1 “This show is for nobody else but the viewer and we want to ensure that we are meeting those needs”.

A producer for the Channel 6 games show, Game On,  has replied to criticism levelled at the show by gamers on boards.ie.

In response to criticism that ‘Game On’ was a "30 minute ad" for Microsoft, Michael Brennan, Producer, Intermission Studio told Games Toaster that “The Programme is not funded by Microsoft or any other 3rd party in any way. Game On is 100% funded by Channel 6”

Brennan said that they rely on Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA Games and other publishers for video content, but he said “Game On is completely independent from the console makers as this keeps the game reviews and features un-biased and credible”.

Expanding on the extensive Xbox 360 coverage he said, “Microsoft did feature primarily in the 1st programme as they had (in our opinion) the most relevant releases/news which we feel the viewers wanted to see. All other consoles, games etc will be covered in the show between now and Christmas”.

“We have had News sections on the Wii, Modding, and the web. As for the PS2 we have shown in game footage reviews of Pro Evo 6, Canis Canem Edit and Battlefield 2142 on the PC”.

With PSP, Brennan stated that they will be “there are no New Major PSP Titles on release at moment apart from GTA Vice city stories, and Killzone liberation”, adding that, along with DS titles, these PSP games will be reviewed “over the coming weeks up to Christmas”.

When asked how does the Microsoft’s involvement compared to other publishers, he said “Microsoft have been very accomodating to the show at launch, as have Sony and Nintendo. All the developers and publishers have also been very helpful and as at the moment Microsoft have the big titles releases for Christmas so they are able to provide more content to us. As we get material we assess how releavant it is to the weeks show and then include it”.

RDS: Gears of War & Wii for the weekend

Image00001 The highly anticipated Xbox 360 game, Gears of War, is playable in Dublin a week before launch at the RDS.

As we reported before, it joins the Nintendo Wii at the ‘Boys 4 Big Boys’ expo until 10.00pm tonight, and over the weekend from 10.00am – 7.00pm.

Image00002 The Nintendo Wii strangely missed the ‘vip’ and press and opening night, leaving any gaming inclined alcoholic drenched hacks to get their blood pumping with Gears of War.

In a four-section stand made out to be sitting and bed rooms, Zelda is accompanied by three Wii Sports games. Nintendo reps also had DS handheld consoles, secured for publicImage00007 use by attachment to the reps.

Wii Sports is set to come preloaded on the console at the December 8 launch, with the new console retailing at around €249 in the Republic, and £179.99 in Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, Gears of War among other games is hosted at the Xbox Live Gaming Centre Image00003stand, giving attendees a feel for the centre and the 360 console. With a no-show of PlayStation 3 this Christmas, Gears of War may be the icing need to attract some traditionally PlayStation gamers – a broad spectrum possibly including most gamers in Ireland.

The newly re-launched Dublin radio station Image00005 Phantom 205.2 FM is the Xbox Live Gaming Centre’s broadcast partner and should be in attendance in some form.

Admission to the expo is €16.00 for adults, €10.00 for accompanied under 16 year olds, and €45.00 for two adults and two under 14s. Dublin Bus routes 7, 5, 18, and 45 serve the RDS, and Lansdowne or Sandymount are local DART stations. DISCUSSION ON BOARDS.IE>>>

Two Irish Wii events appear to be cancelled, with events original listed for Liffey Valley shopping centre in west Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin now not listed at the Wii tour website.

Wii price and dates for US & Japan

060829_rs_ss_begin_your_training_swordfi_1
Ubisoft's Red Steel, for the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo has revealed their launch dates and price for their Wii (pronounced ‘we’) console for North America and Japan. European launch details are expected tomorrow (Friday 15).

It will sell at $249.99 and 25,000 yen (RRP), launching in America on November 19, followed by Japan on December 2. The move is the second Japanese console maker to give a greater focus on the North America. The territory includes the United States, the strongest Xbox market, although among the only market in which the Xbox is doing exceptionally well.

Around 30 titles are expected before the end of the year. The company says their own games will be set at a RRP of $49.99.

Nintendo says that in the US the one wireless remote control-shaped controller, along with one “Nunchuk” controller (both pictured), and what the company terms as the “groundbreaking collection of five different Wii Sports games on one disc”. Wii Sports includes tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing.

Wii_nunstyle2_0501Nintendo today also named their menu system as the “Wii Channel Menu”. The firm claims it will make the console “approachable and customizable for everyone”. Besides games the interface will feature the ability to look at news and weather, or to upload and send photos, in a release the company stops short of saying full internet access. The sensors in the PlayStation 3 controllers are more limited, for example can not aim and act more like real aeroplane controllers.

In technical terms the Wii is said to be relatively close to the GameCube. It is not next generation in comparable hardware terms to the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3, leaving less of a graphical “jump”; however the central change is the normal controller with built-in sensors, allowing games to be controlled with swings, swipes, aiming, punches, and slices.

The console will have 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, two 2.0 USB ports, built-in Wi-Fi, an SD memory card port, four ports for GameCube controllers, GameCube memory cards slots, and an AV Multi-output port for component, composite or S-video.

Irish Nintendo DS site launches

Ds_lite A new site, Wiffy.ie, has launched to cater for sharing ‘friend codes’ for the Nintendo DS to other Irish gamers.

Friend codes are used to identify other users on the DS’s multiplayer network. Once users are connected vie a wireless WiFi internet connection, they can play enabled games and communicate with each other. Nintendo’s upcoming console the Wii will also use the codes.

“When Mario Kart was released in November 2005, I knew this system was something special, playing online so easily with friends was the key feature” said Barry Hand, site developer, “The downside was finding new friends who also had the game, I really wanted to play against other Irish gamers, I knew lots of people were playing, I just didn’t know where they were”.

The DS was released about two years ago, while a slim version the DS Lite was out in June of this year.

Nintendo Wii US price, sort of...

Wii_function

The United States and Japan pricing for Nintendo’s next console, the Wii (pronounced Wee), has been confirmed to "not exceed $250 in America, or ¥25,000 in Japan", according to the company.

At today’s rates that translates to just over 195 euro, or £133 UKP – although console prices are usually not directly converted.

Correction: For a short time, this article wrongly reported that the Wii would retail at $250, the company actually said that it would “not exceed” such a price. The above news has been fixed to state such.

DS gets free WiFi in Ireland

Nintendo_ds_lite_1

Nintendo has partnered with BT to provide free multiplayer gaming over WiFi for the DS handheld console at hotspot in the Republic and Northern Ireland. (Early this week the company released details of a scaled down version of the handheld, ‘DS Lite’ - pictured, right)

BT Openzone currently has over 270 public wireless broadband, the deal announced early this week will see this expand to some game outlets, namely Game, GameStop, HMV, Smyths Toys, and “other key outlets across Ireland”.

WiFi location currently enabled include Cork Airport, O'Briens cafés, Insomnia cafés, in the Republic, and at BT NI payphones, Belfast City Airport, Belfast's Great Victoria Station, Belfast’s Central Station, PC World outlets, and McDonalds in Northern Ireland, and both north and south at some Maxol filling stations, and a number of hotels and other cafés. The full and up-to-date list can be found here.

Nintendo’s DS multiplayer gaming services is not subscriptions based, the only cost to the user is broadband at home, or a cup of coffee as an excuse to stay on the premises. Nintendo also offers a home WiFi adaptor for the DS to insure easer access, it retails for about 40 euro.

“Nintendo are bringing a significant, groundbreaking deal to Ireland. Launching our Wi-Fi service in partnership with BT Openzone is a massive statement of our commitment” stated David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK.

GameCon 8 in February

The 36-hour “gaming extravaganza”, GameCon 8, will be held at the Castleknock Hotel & Country Club, Porterstown Road, Dublin 15, near the M50. The multiplayer gaming event will run from 9pm February 24, to 9am on February 26.

Entry is 40 euro, or 30 euro by pre-booking online by credit card or sending a check or postal order to the organizers. According to the LAN’s website, there are currently 104 people registered, including 22 pre-paid.

“We use GameCon to analyse the market, otherwise gamers are very hard to find... We run show reels and conduct questionnaires to get feedback on particular games” Jermain (Jazz) Williams told the Sunday Business Post back in 2002, adding “For example, we have been involved in providing feedback on the Fifa Game, which is Ireland's number one game, and Burnout 3, an Xbox game. Microsoft added a special feature enabling gamers to create their own soundtrack, thanks to feedback from our gamers”.

Sponsors of Gamecon include Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (Xbox), Nokia (N-Gage), Electronic Arts, Activision, Take Two (owner of Rockstar), Creative Labs, Alienware, GameStop, and retailers G3. The now defunct games publisher Digtal Jesters still appears on the event’s website. While Xtra-vision is no longer listed as a sponsor - it is said that the company is scaling back games operations (apprently  including closing the specialist Xtra-Game stores, meanwhile the retailer and renter is currently running clearout sale across film, music and games, with the latter selling as low as 9.99 euro).   .

Registration is open at http://gamecon.ie/; our article on GameCon 7 is here.
